Zoning out

A Mosman makeover gives a busy young family both room to move and a snappy new pad.
The lure of the beaches was too hard to resist for Karyn and Anthony and they decided Mosman was the place for them. When they found they needed more space for their two growing sons, they enlisted the services of a long-time friend, architect Catherine Finlay, who points out that the family required a design that would work for them now and in the future too. “The renovation was seen as an investment for the long term,” she says.
The design brief they gave Catherine with their immediate situation in mind was for a family living area that flowed out to the entertaining space outside, landscaping at the rear to address the site’s steep slope, individual rooms for the boys with a ‘break-out’ place just for them, and a master bedroom with views, walk-ins and an ensuite. Formal living areas, a home office and a new entrance to improve the street presence were also on the list, along with a bedroom/bathroom for an au pair that could be converted to other uses in future.
Karyn and Catherine worked together on the decorating to achieve a contemporary family home that was also practical and comfortable, with simple lines and a neutral palette. This allows her to throw in different hues and accessories when she feels like a change. However, the boys chose splashes of colour for their rooms which gave them a sense of making the space their own.
