The cooler weather does allow us to focus our attention on things within the home and gives us a chance to add a little comfort where it’s lacking – and that’s a theme running through this issue. Carla provides a round-up of expert advice on doors and windows, and there’s a lot of helpful information in the feature on timber floors too. And then we thought you’d like some inspiration for ways to make you feel more comfortable in your own home – we’ve started the ball rolling with five easy things and I’m sure you can come up with plenty more that won’t take much time or effort but will make you feel more relaxed. We hope you find the help and inspiration you’re seeking in this issue, there’s plenty to read with all our regular features and of course a peek inside five fabulous homes as well.
MY STYLE
There are many beautiful homes out there with the latest in interior and furniture trends, but one pitfall of going with what’s ‘in’ is that you end up with a home that looks like everyone else’s. We’re all for following new styles, but doing so within the context of your personal style is the way to go. Interpret trends to suit yourself and display them in your home in a way that reflects your own character and lifestyle. You have to live in it every day, so if you don’t like what’s fashionable, don’t buy it! Individuality is far more appealing than a generic ‘in’ look.
STYLE ICONS
According to the saying, it’s ‘age before beauty’, but why not have both? Brands that stand the test of time usually do so for a very good reason – because they’re beautiful. Grange has been in the French cabinetmaking industry for a century now, and to celebrate it has created the elegant 1904 Table. With its smooth tabletop and classic cast-aluminium frame stamped with ‘GRANGE 1904’, this is classic French design at its best. Available from Domo Collections.
BEYOND THE BIG APPLE
Guzman Y Gomez founder Steven Marks and his TV personality wife, Penne Dennison show us around their harbour-front home which they share with their two young daughters. A confection of colour thanks to chic furniture from New York and some folk-art pieces that speak of heartfelt ties with Mexico, the home is bright and happy – just like the family. An array of Steven and Penne’s keepsakes provides a spot of interest in the hallway. Included are a sculpture from a market near Shanghai, statues from Africa and black and white photos of New York City taken by Penne’s photographer friend.
STYLE WITH CONSCIENCE
After working on an eco-display project for their interior design firm MEI, Cris Bucknall and Paula Breckman realised that eco-friendly furnishings were hard to find. Taking matters into their own hands, they started EcoChic. “We decided we needed to offer a unique collection that would be easily available to people, and the web seemed like the perfect place to begin,” says Cris. A hit with Australia’s A-list, EcoChic offers stunning furniture and homewares with a conscience.
