The Money Shot

PR guru Max Markson knows how to get people's attention - and the view from his Dover Heights home is enough to make anyone stop and stare.
Story by Mark Vender
Max's house - a four-bed, three-bath stunner in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs - offers a fascinating insight into his life. You won't find any strict line here between work and personal life. Not only does Max have a home office, he hires his place out for events and shoots, and jokes that he still finds sequins in the pool from when Natalie Bassingthwaighte filmed her music video there. He's also big on playing host. "It's great for entertaining," he confirms. Although Max didn't need to do any work on the house itself when he moved in, he did need to furnish it - and fast.
"I flew in my friend Hinke, who's an interior designer in Bali, and said 'I've got a party on this Saturday.' That was on Monday morning."
So began an intense few days of trawling the local furniture and homewares shops. Max took the week off work and, with Hinke's help, brought together an eclectic range of pieces that successfully combined the sharp sophistication of a black and white palette with the relaxed vibe of a Balinese beach house.
While Max deferred to Hinke on most things, he did pick out a couple of must-haves. These included the two chandeliers above and just outside the dining area, and an old-fashioned movie spotlight which reminds him of his childhood on the coast of England and his time as a spotlight operator.
The view from the rooftop terrace is enough to cut short any conversation. On one side it almost feels like you can reach out and put your hand in Sydney Harbour; on the other, the uninterrupted view of the Pacific is "spectacular and overwhelming" as Max puts it.
"That's the money shot," he states, "just sitting, having a drink, looking out. I went to a lot of homes, searching for this. I'm very blessed and privileged to have this place, and I appreciate it tremendously."
