The Art of Faking It

The Art of Faking It
The unreal way to give a room pizzazz
We all the love the beautiful vases of fresh flowers we see adorning the polished surfaces of designer homes featured in glossy decorating magazines.
This look is great for special occasions when we really want to impress guests, but for a day-to-day decorating solution we have to think outside the box. And that's where artificial flowers and textural sticks come into their own - and no, I'm not referring to the silk flowers that held pride of place on grandma's hall table.
Some interior decorators might frown at the suggestion, but for busy people in the everyday world, like most of us, there's an unbelievable range of extremely realistic alternatives out there ready and waiting to be put to use.
My personal all-time favourites are natural sticks and branches and, in my opinion, the bigger they are the better. These long textural sticks offer interesting materials and shapes and, when displayed in large urns or pots, create maximum impact and dramatic effect within the home. They also work perfectly with contemporary decor as they blend beautifully with all the neutral tones and warm shades of chocolate in vogue at the moment.
In today's open living spaces it is these big statement pieces that provide the ‘wow!' factor. And while we love the wide-open nature of modern living areas, these arrangements, strategically placed, also signal different zones within the space and draw the eye around the room, thus giving it serious star quality.
With some of the artificial flowers available you would be hard pressed to tell the difference between real and fake when they're arranged correctly. Your investment in these decorator items is well worth the initial outlay, as they will continue to look fantastic for years to come.
Why not try some artificial flowers and leaves in a glass vase with designer pebbles at the base to give a classically elegant look to the dining table, or perhaps a few artificial plants on your outdoor table to make summer entertaining a seriously stylish affair.
Trust me, I've adopted this philosophy wholeheartedly in my home. Visitors constantly marvel at the fact that the plants in the outdoor living space aren't real - because they're just so authentic. And let's face it, it saves the long line of plants destined to meet their maker because I forgot to water them.
