The Importance of a Good Shag

Karen turns her attention to an oldie that lost its appeal but is now back in favour and more popular than ever.

The Importance of a Good Shag
Never underestimate the effect a great rug can have in a room.

A shag rug is my all-time favourite on the floor as it makes a true design statement in any interior. I love the way different textures and weaves can add depth, warmth and colour to a room.
A great rug can anchor a space together - by this I mean it connects all the elements in the room to a central grounded point. And because its is three-dimensional in its composition, a shag does this better than any other rug I know. It's this extra dimensional effect that performs true design magic by introducing instant warmth and intimacy.

Now, if the mere mention of a shag rug drags up memories of the seventies, just wait until you see some of the newer ones. Trust me, they're back bigger and better than ever and look fantastic in many different rooms of your home.
They've gone through a radical transformation and are now available in a staggering range of colours and modern contemporary styles. From the traditional thick woollen type and two-toned carved-pile to my favourite, a mixture of silk threads and fabrics woven together for an extra dash of bling, shag rugs are really proving the most versatile must-have accessories when it comes to decorating.

From a design point of view, a rug can incorporate all the colours in your decor and immediately make a space feel more comfortable. Echo the colours back into the space with cushions, artwork and decorator pieces and you give a real designer look to the room.

On a practical level, shag rugs can be used over hardwood or tiled floors and also in regular carpeted areas to protect high-traffic zones while giving warmth and comfort underfoot.

There's plenty of scope to be a little adventurous too, so don't be shy about putting shag rugs in other rooms of your home as well. A well-placed rug in a bedroom will have maximum impact and give your private space a really luxurious feel. Imagine placing your feet on a soft shaggy pile each morning.

And the really great thing about shag rugs is that they work equally well in a variety of styles, whether your look is contemporary, traditional or country.
